Zoals ik op verschillende plaatsen op deze website roep, ben ik geïnspireerd door Neville Goddard (1905-1972). Op zijn gedachtengoed heb ik mijn methode voor transformatie gebaseerd. Als je voor personal freedom coaching gaat dan dank je je succes aan deze mysticus. Ik kwam bij hem uit na een intensieve spirituele zoektocht.
Die begon met de vraag: Hoe komt het toch dat ik zo gelukkig ben, terwijl de omstandigheden daar totaal geen aanleiding toe geven?
Op zoek naar antwoord begon ik bij Eckhart Tolle, die alles weet van verlichting, en vervolgde via David Hawkings, wiens bewustzijnsschaal laat zien hoe je als mens op kunt klimmen naar meer geluk, naar non-dualist Jiddu Krishnamurti en ik eindigde bij Neville Goddard. De laatste stelt dat elk mens via Staten van bewustzijn een spirituele ontwikkeling kan doormaken naar de hoogste, meest gelukkige toestand.
Deze Staten worden in de Bijbel beschreven. Niet schrikken. Het heeft niets met de kerk te maken wat er in dat boek staat. Goddard ontrafelt de verborgen betekenis van het Nieuwe Testament. Dat blijkt eerder een zelfhulpboek voor verlichting, dan een blauwdruk voor moraal.
De weg neer de meest vrije, gelukkige staat wordt volgens hem gepersonifieerd door Christus. Dat is een Staat van bewustzijn die iedereen kan ervaren en die wordt gekenmerkt door een gevoel van innerlijke vrede.
Goddard heeft geen kerk gesticht. Bij leven huurde hij kleine theaterzalen waar hij zijn verhaal stug bleef herhalen voor een smalle groep trouwe toehoorders. Geschoold in de Kabbala en het Hermetisme komt hij tot een uitleg van de Bijbel die mij veel logischer, realistischer en praktischer voorkomt dan de christelijke uitleg.
Neville Goddard concentreert zich op twee lessen uit de Schrift: de Wet en de Belofte.
De Wet: verbeelding creëert de realiteit.
De Belofte: God werd mens zodat mens God kan worden.
Aan de hand van deze lezing– Seeing Christ Through The Eyes Of Paul – uit 1967, wil ik je meenemen naar zijn gedachtegoed. Ik ga er vanuit dat je de Engelse taal voldoende beheerst, zodat ik een vertaling achterwege kan laten en me kan concentreren op de strekking.
Tonight’s subject is very, very practical, yet profoundly spiritual, for we are going to search for the cause of the phenomena of life called in scripture, ‘the Father’. So come with me and let me show you Jesus Christ, the father of life, through the eyes of Paul. Now, there is no mention of Paul in any contemporary work of the first century, nor is there any historical record of a man named Paul. He is mentioned in the last part of the Book of Acts and in his thirteen letters – but who is he? Paul, like Moses, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Jesus Christ is a state of consciousness.
Volgens Goddard is de Bijbel geen verslag van historische gebeurtenissen, de personages stellen Staten van bewustzijn voor. Een Staat definieert hij als: de totaalsom van je reacties op de omstandigheden waarin je verkeert.
Je zou Staten ook als gedrags-sjablonen kunnen zien. Staten van verdriet of woede betreed je als automatisch, daar word je ingelokt door wat je overkomt. De hogere Staten kun je bewust betreden. Ook de hoogste, meest gelukkige Staat: Daarin ben je als ‘God’. Zelf gebruik ik dat woord liever niet, omdat er geen overeenstemming over de betekenis bestaat, maar als je de Bijbel behandelt kan je er niet omheen. In de betekenis die Goddard hanteert is God het Al en het Al is Mind.
Het grote geheim van de Schrift is volgens Goddard dat je God alleen kunt kennen door hem te ervaren. Door hem te zijn.
Deze interpretatie, dat ‘God’ niet buiten jezelf bestaat, maar zich manifesteert als een Staat van Zijn binnen je eigen bewustzijn, is zo radicaal anders dan de gangbare uitleg, dat het bij mij een paar jaar duurde voor hij goed en wel helemaal indaalde. Radicaal anders in de zin dat: als iemand zich voor God uitgeeft, hoeft diegene hier in het westen niet op applaus te rekenen. Toch is dat volgens Goddard de les die Paul ons wil leren.
Dat ik extra moeite heb gedaan om deze zienswijze te begrijpen heeft er mee te maken dat de Staat die mijn naam draagt, Paul, volgens Neville de belangrijkste staat in de Bijbel is. (In de Nederlandse bijbelvertaling kennen we Paul als Paulus. Ik houd hier Paul aan voor het ontnuchterende effect ).
Paul is de man om wie het hele nieuwe testament draait. Zijn dertien brieven zijn de eerste teksten die over Christus zijn geschreven. Paul komt ook voor in het boek Handelingen, dat is geschreven door Lucas. In elk geval, de vier apostelen die verantwoordelijk zijn voor de andere teksten in het Nieuwe Testament waren bekend met de brieven van Paul. Die vormen het uitgangspunt van het Grote boek.
In het Nieuwe Testament deelt deze schrijver zijn blijdschap over de verlichting die hij heeft ontvangen. Dat doet hij wel zo effectief dat het tot de beweging van het Christendom heeft geleid, die tot op de dag van vandaag bestaat.
En dan hebben we het over de Staat Paul, want met de schrijver Paul zit het nog weer anders dan je dacht. Als je nagaat dat theologen het er tegenwoordig over eens zijn dat een groep van schrijvers verantwoordelijk is voor de teksten in het Oude Testament die aan Mozes worden toegeschreven, dan kun je erop wachten tot hetzelfde bij Paul gebeurt. Achter Paul gaat een club van mystici schuil, die de Staat van verlichting kennen en een methode doorgeven om gelukkig te leven.
De lezing van Neville die ik hier behandel gaat over de uitleg van het mysterie van het leven, dat in de Bijbel wordt aangeduid met de ‘Vader’. Gezien door de ogen van Paul.
Van deze Paul bestaat geen bewijs dat hij echt heeft bestaan, opent Neville. Hij wordt in geen enkel boek uit de eerste eeuw genoemd, behalve in de bijbel. Zijn naam is ook niet terug te vinden in de registers van de gevangenissen, die in Rome in die dagen nauwkeurig zijn bijgehouden en bewaard. Terwijl de meeste brieven van Paul vanuit de gevangenis zijn geschreven.
Dat er geen bewijs van zijn bestaan is, vormt volgens Neville een aanwijzing dat je Paul niet als een mens van vlees en bloed moet opvatten. Je kunt zijn Staat kopiëren. Net als die van Mozes, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob en Christus. Als schrijver wil ik deze gedachte ondersteunen met het argument dat het situeren van een personage in de gevangenis een perfecte metafoor schept voor bevrijding. Wat het thema van deze Paul is.
The Bible speaks of a fundamental state of consciousness from which other states derive. That fundamental state is the Father, the creative power in you. This world is made up of God and the extension of himself called ‘you’. Say “I am” and you have said God’s name.
In de uitleg van Goddard zou je het woord God kunnen vervangen door ‘bewustzijn’, of ‘intelligente energie’. Ergens in het Oude Testament vraagt Mozes aan God wat zijn werkelijke naam is. Die antwoordt hem dan met ‘Ik ben’. Goddard interpreteert dat antwoord als: het besef dat je bestaat, dat is God.
(Je zou jezelf in geval van ernstig geheugenverlies kunnen afvragen waar je bent, of zelfs wie je bent, maar dat je er bent: daarover twijfel je nooit. Die zekerheid is God).
De eerste, meest fundamentele staat van zijn is: de Vader. Dat is de creatieve kracht in de mens. Jouw bewustzijn is onderdeel van het grote bewustzijn (de Vader).
De wereld waarin wij leven is één groot bewustzijn, een mind, die je God zou kunnen noemen.
Om dat te illustreren. De natuurkunde leert dat alle materie is opgebouwd uit atomen. Dat zijn uiteindelijk piepkleine lichtjes die rond elkaar cirkelen. Op een relatief enorme afstand van elkaar. Vergelijkbaar met de afstand tussen de sterren die we aan de hemel zien.
(Binnen de kwantummechanica wordt sinds Sir James Jeans in 1925 het inzicht gedeeld dat het universum als een gedachte is in de mind van zijn schepper. Natuurkundige Richard Con Henri schrijft in de toonaangevende wetenschappelijke publicatie Nature (2005): het universum is Mind. Lees: The mental universe)
Dat wij de objecten om ons heen als vast ervaren, komt doordat wij die atomen met ons bewustzijn in een patroon schikken. De formatie van de atomen bepaalt de vorm en vastheid.
Als we naar de feiten kijken bestaat het hele universum dus uit lichtjes, die wij met ons verstand interpreteren. Dat doen we met dezelfde verbeeldingskracht als waarmee we van de pixels in het tv scherm een film maken.
Dus als we de natuurkundige waarheid naast deze spirituele uitleg leggen, dan komen ze voor honderd procent overeen: verbeelding creëert de realiteit.
Now let us look at Jesus Christ through the eyes of the state of Paul. Schooled in the traditions of his father, Paul knew Hebrew backwards. He knew the law of Moses and protected these traditions with his life, opposing anyone who was in conflict with his belief.
Then he saw the spirit behind the letter. Just as you – believing what you were taught by your mother and father and Sunday school teacher – when you enter the state called Paul you will understand the meaning behind the allegory; and – like Paul – you will be just as ardent in promoting it as you were in defending your belief in a physical Jesus Christ.
We kijken in deze lezing naar Jezus Christus door de ogen van Paul. Dit personage wordt gekenmerkt door zijn grote kennis van het Oude Testament. Paul verdedigt de tradities van de bijbel aanvankelijk te vuur en te zwaard. Tot de ziel uit het Oude Testament tot hem doordringt. Dan ontwaakt hij.
Als je de staat van Paul inneemt, zul je dus een vergelijkbaar effect ervaren. Je ontdekt dat de uitleg die alle kenners van het geloof je hebben bijgebracht niet klopt. Je komt erachter dat de karakters in de bijbel geen historische figuren zijn, zoals je hebt geleerd, maar dat het spelers zijn in een psychologisch drama, een roman vol metaforen. De bijbel blijkt een allegorie.
Zo fanatiek als Paul het Joodse geloof van zijn ouders verdedigde, zo fanatiek verspreidt hij na zijn ontwaken zijn nieuwe visie. Als je in de staat van Paul komt wil je dat ook. Je snapt dat Christus een personificatie is van God en dat wil je iedereen laten weten.
Paul makes the statement: “I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who has faith. That power is Christ.” And it is Paul who confesses: “Even though I once regarded Christ from a human point of view, I regard him thus no longer.” Having learned from the traditions of his earthly father that he was to “Make no graven image unto me” Paul believed that Jesus Christ was an individual like himself. But when he realized who Jesus Christ really was, he defined him in his letter to the Corinthians as the power of God and the wisdom of God saying: “I preach only Jesus Christ crucified and raised from the dead.”
Paul bekent: ‘Ook al beschouwde ik Christus eerst vanuit een menselijk perspectief, zo beschouw ik hem nu niet meer.’
Hij zag Jezus aanvankelijk als een mens zoals hijzelf, maar na zijn spirituele ervaring, definieert hij hem als de kracht en de wijsheid van God. Met de woorden: ‘Ik promoot alleen de gekruisigde Jezus die opstond uit de dood’.
Voor de meeste buitenkerkelijken is het beeld van Christus aan het kruis afstotelijk.
Het brengt ongeveer de volgende boodschap over: Tweeduizend jaar geleden kwam een goeierik ons namens God vertellen hoe we zouden moeten leven. Die is onterecht veroordeeld en gruwelijke ter dood gebracht. Wat een onrecht! We moeten ons schamen en allemaal medelijden met hem hebben.
De kerk geeft dit drama betekenis: Hij werd niet zomaar vermoord, hij is voor onze zonden gestorven.
Voor die uitleg heb ik nog geen plek binnen mijn logica gevonden. Aan de ene kant vertelt het verhaal dat wij mensen zondige wezens zijn en aan de andere kant is hun heilige held voor onze zonden gestorven. Dan zou je er toch op moeten kunnen vertrouwen dat we nu allemaal zondenvrij zijn. Hoe kan de kerk haar gelovigen dan millenia-lang voorhouden dat ze niet deugen en goede daden moeten verrichten om kans te maken in de hemel te komen?
Enfin. Als je meegaat in de uitleg van Goddard dat het hele verhaal over Christus een parabel is, dan maakt de kruisiging daar eenmaal onderdeel van uit. Het karakter Paul stelt dat hij de opstanding van Christus na zijn dood vertegenwoordigt. Het kan maar duidelijk zijn dat het hem om de verbeeldingskracht gaat, niet om de mens Jezus.
Paul teaches that the power of God and the wisdom of God is crucified and buried in Man, and from that state of death will he rise. Now seeing Christ as his human imagination Paul confesses: “I once regarded Christ from a human point of view; I regard him thus no longer.”
Met de dood van het personage Christus worden zijn kwaliteiten symbolisch overgedragen op de mens. De kracht en de wijsheid van God zijn gekruisigd en begraven in de mens en vanuit deze, 'bewusteloze', staat zullen die verrijzen. Een beeldspraak om het inzicht over te brengen dat als je afscheid neemt van je geconditioneerde zelf, dat je bewustzijn dan actief wordt als helende verbeeldingskracht. Genaamd Christus.
Who is this creative power who was once regarded as human?
In the 10th chapter of Matthew it is made to say: “Everyone who acknowledges me before men, I will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven; but whoever denies me before men, I will also deny before my Father who is in heaven.
Wie is die creatieve kracht die eerst als mens beschouwd werd?
De schrijversgroep Matteüs laat Christus zeggen: Iedereen die mij (het scheppende bewustzijn) erkent als de ware mens binnen de mens, die krijgt toegang tot mijn vader, ofwel het grote bewustzijn. Maar als je niet gelooft dat ik besta, dan ontvang je ook de kracht van mijn vader niet (en blijf je een speelbal van omstandigheden).
Think not that I have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. To set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. Anyone who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.”
Paul maakt duidelijk dat je bewustzijn eerst komt en daarna pas de wereld om je heen. Het bewustzijn is de oorzaak van alles, niet het gevolg.
Hij gebruikt nogal agressieve termen om uit te leggen dat verbeeldingskracht de realiteit bepaalt. Hij zegt dat zelfs je naasten, je dierbaren, je ouders van verbeeldingskracht zijn gemaakt. Je creëert je omgeving zelf. Dat doe je voor het grootste deel onbewust. In het onderbewuste liggen de patronen van de schepping vast. En omdat het onbewuste een gemeenschappelijke verzameling van informatie is, ervaar je niet dat je de objecten en mensen om je heen zelf schept.
Waarom is het zo belangrijk om je bewustzijn op de eerste plaats te zetten? Het doel van het verhaal is je de verlichte Staat te leren herkennen, waarin je innerlijke vrede ervaart onafhankelijk van omstandigheden.
Neville vervolgt met te benadrukken dat de ogenschijnlijke tegenstelling in de woorden van Jezus, opgetekend door de apostelen, hem niet zijn ontgaan.
Claiming that he came into the world not to abolish the law of Moses but to fulfill it (and the 5th commandment is “Honor your father and mother”) how can he ask us to love him more than our father and mother? When I was a child I heard these stories in my Sunday school class, and I knew that if I had to love Jesus more than my mother and father I was not worthy of him. To ask me to love some invisible power more than I loved my sweet, kind, loving mother and the giant of a man who was my father was to ask the impossible of me. So what is being said here?
Father and mother are the obvious physical causes of the birth of a child in this world. Whether it is human, bird, or animal, we all have fathers and mothers. They are the physical cause of the phenomena of life, as you are now an objective fact. Then comes an invisible cause saying you must love it more than visible causation. No one is setting you against your father or mother, daughter or daughter-in-law – how could they!
Man sets up physical causation, saying you must join the “right” club, live in the “right” neighborhood, know the “right” people. That your place of birth or the color of your skin is the cause of your experiences. Now you are told that the cause is invisible and you must love this cause more than any earthly thing. You are urged to fall in love with it! To make it yourself and have no other god besides it! And may I tell you: when you do, you will love your father and mother, daughter, and son more than ever before, as you will no longer see them as physical causation.
Als promotor van zijn nieuwe zienswijze benadrukt Paul dat hij de geboden van het Oude Testament niet wil afschaffen. Je vader en moeder eren is helemaal okay, hij wil alleen het accent verleggen. Je ouders scheppen je fysieke lichaam, maar je leven dank je aan het bewustzijn. Je besef er te zijn, je ervaringen, je geluk, liefde...die hebben plaats binnen die intelligente energie, de onzichtbare oorzaak van alles. Zodra je dat beseft houd je nog meer van je ouders en kinderen.
De openbaring is dat als we open staan voor deze intelligente kracht, dat dan alle gedachten die ons niet dienen verdwijnen. Dan leven we in een gelukzalige staat, de wereld om ons heen verandert in een ‘koninkrijk’.
Qua tip: zodra je innerlijke vrede ervaart, het belangrijkste kenmerk van God in de mens, treedt dat effect onmiddellijk op. Al het mooie toont zich aan je. Momenten van verlichting zijn een vrij alledaags verschijnsel. Het gaat erom ze te herkennen.
You will know that nothing physical is the cause of the phenomena of life. You will see them as aspects of your invisible body that has awakened. There is no character in scripture that has a physical history. They are there to depict divine history. Paul was trained in the Jewish faith and knew Judaism backwards. He said: “I am a son of Abraham of the tribe of Benjamin.” And when he was told: “Your great learning is turning you mad,” he replied: “I am not mad. I am speaking the sober truth.” Paul is telling you of the resurrection of a creative power of which you have been totally unaware.
Paul vertelt over de opstanding van een creatieve kracht, waarvan je je niet bewust was.
This creative power is buried in everyone, and that power is God himself. There is no intermediary between you and God. Jesus Christ is the creative power of your own wonderful human imagination!
Die kracht ligt in iedereen begraven, die kracht is God zelf. Er bestaat geen intermediair tussen jou en God. God/Christus is je verbeeldingskracht.
That is Jesus Christ and there is no other! God the Father is buried in you as your I am, and your human I amness is Jesus Christ. This is the being Paul speaks of when he says: “Test yourself; Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is in you? Unless, of course, you fail to meet the test.”
Het gaat er dus om je bewust te worden van je scheppend vermogen. Dat is God. Alles wat je achter 'Ik ben' plaatst en waar je niet over twijfelt, dat creëer je.
Dat is volgens Paul de weg van God. Of: De manier om in de huid van God te kruipen en gebruik te maken van zijn scheppende kwaliteit.
Hij roept dringend op om zijn stelling te testen. Daarvoor hebben de schrijvers die zich Paul noemen het Nieuwe Testament geschreven. Om je te helpen. Met het ontdekken van je scheppende vermogen. Je wordt door Paul uitgedaagd om iets van jezelf te maken. Om je verlangens achter ‘Ik ben…’ te plakken.
En ga maar na. Zodra je van jezelf zegt: Ik ben heel sterk en je blijft dat herhalen, dan word je dat. Dan stel je alles in het werk om sterk te zijn.
Zeg je voortdurend tegen jezelf: ‘Ik ben een loser’ dan wordt dat na verloop van tijd ook waar. Je creëert je zelfbeeld.
Now let me share a letter from a friend. She said: “I am a freelance designer. I never seek work, but as I sit at home and imagine I am working, they call. In the past six months I have received very few orders from a company that kept me very busy in the past, so I called them to discover that they had employed a full-time art director and would no longer require my services. After hanging up the phone I revised this conversation. I heard them tell me they had lots of work for me, and I felt the thrill in their words. One week later they called, asking me to design a 26-page book of institutional advertising, plus four ads for Harper’s Bazaar.
This was more thaen they had given me in the past at any one time. Now I am busier, happier, and making more money than ever before, and my technique is simple. Sitting in my chair I quietly listen for the phone to ring, answer it in my imagination and hear the orders I desire to create – and they come.”
Met dit verhaal geeft Goddard een voorbeeld van zo’n test. Paul roept niet voor niets op om je geloof te testen. Om te ontdekken dat God je scheppende kracht is.
Als dit de eerste keer is dat je met zijn gedachtegoed in aanraking komt is het naar mijn mening niet het beste voorbeeld. Hoewel het heel goed mogelijk is om via het gemeenschappelijke bewustzijnsveld de gedachten van een ander te beïnvloeden, of zelfs helemaal te veranderen. Ik heb wat dat betreft allerlei bijzondere voorbeelden te vertellen.
Maar zoiets vereist training. (Waar ik je overigens graag bij help, ik ben niet voor niets een coaching praktijk begonnen).
Het succes van dit ‘wonder’ zit hem in de zekerheid waarmee je het bewustzijnsveld beïnvloedt. Je geloof in dat vermogen groeit naarmate je het vaker toepast. In de verlichte staat bestaat geen twijfel. Zoals dat met elke kunde is die je beheerst. Je bent zeker.
Wat mij betreft gaat het er bij de test van Paul niet in de eerste plaats om de gedachten van anderen te beïnvloeden. Het gaat om het durven geloven in wat je wil. Het hele universum is geschapen via aanhoudende gedachten, daar ligt het niet aan.
Dat kun je uitproberen….. Het zijn de aanhoudende sterke gedachten waar je niet over twijfelt die de werkelijkheid scheppen.
Als in: je identificeert je met de verhalen die je jezelf al jaren vertelt. Dat ben je. Zo is het concept dat je van jezelf hebt ontstaan. Door aanhoudende gedachten over jezelf.
Om de stelling van Paul te testen, kun je veel eenvoudiger voorbeelden bedenken. Bij alles wat je accepteert, wat je waar vindt van jezelf, daar gebruik je de scheppingskracht al.
Als je schilder bent en iemand spreekt je aan als schilder dan ervaar je dat als de waarheid. Maar ben je in je vrije tijd wat yoga oefeningen gaan doen en iemand noemt je yogaleraar dan zul je giebelend bekennen dat je een hobbyist bent.
Je gelooft het zelf niet. Wil je echter yogaleraar worden, dan helpt het wel om alvast te voelen dat je die leraar bent. Je zelfbeeld te veranderen. Het te zijn.
Een nog veel praktischer test: je wordt ‘s morgens wakker met een rothumeur.
Waar komt dat vandaan? Zeer waarschijnlijk had je een vervelende droom. Je kunt nu twee dingen doen. Wachten tot er allerlei gedachten te binnen schieten die bevestigen dat de wereld een hel is, of dat humeur aanpakken. Een korte meditatie. De trillingen in je lichaam tot bedaren brengen en zorgen dat je je goed voelt. Je zorgt dat je innerlijke vrede vindt, (het belangrijkste kenmerk van God). Daarna kijk je nog eens om je heen en bedenkt wat een fantastische plek deze wereld is. Hop! Koninkrijk open. Je bent als in de hemel.
Dat is wat Paul met testen bedoelt. Dat je zelf kunt bepalen hoe gelukkig je bent. In die zin ben je als de schepper: Jij bent God.
In dat gedrag-sjabloon ben je helemaal okay.
De rest van de lezing laat ik met rust. Lees zelf maar. Helemaal aan het einde tref je nog mijn conclusie.
Now, who is Jesus Christ? Scripture tells you he is the creative power of God and the wisdom of God, and by him all things are made, and without him is not anything made that is made. Tell me, how are you using God’s creative power? How are you using Christ? By thinking someone doesn’t like you? That’s Christ in action! It is he who is causing the other not to like you. And when that seeming other slaps you in the face or spits on you, you may wonder why – but it’s because you did it. There is no power but Christ!
No one can do anything to you unless you first do it to yourself by the use of Christ, God’s creative power, whose name is I am. Paul gave us the foundation from which everything is built and claimed that no other foundation can anyone lay other than Christ, the creative power of God. Then he warns us that there will be those who will come, claiming to have apostolic descent. They will dress themselves in jewels and robes and make you think they are in some holy state, but they are foolish.
There is only one foundation, and that is your own wonderful human imagination, and there is no other. Now, let me tell you of another lady who is here tonight. She said: “Ten days ago I heard from my mother that she believed she was afflicted with the same problem she had experienced a year ago. When I received the letter I sat right down and wrote her saying: “The God in me is speaking to the God in you, telling me that you do not have this affliction and that you are perfect.’ I wrote so convincingly that when she received the letter she believed me, and when the tests were made they came out negative. I have never been able to use the word `imagination’ to my family, so I use the word `God’ and they understand.”
May I now quote the 10th chapter of Mathew to her? “He who dares not acknowledge me before men, I will not acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven. He who denies me, I will deny to my Father who is in heaven. For I have come not to bring peace, but a sword to set a man against his Father, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law, for the enemies of a man are those of his own household. He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.”
I will urge her, tonight, to tell her family the truth. Even though they fly into space, tell them who Jesus Christ really is. Don’t beat around the bush and leave them sound asleep. This is the conflict. When truth comes into the world, it is in conflict with everything that was formerly believed. The Father is always the new against the old, the Son against the Father. Even though you once considered Christ as human, when he is quickened in you, you will regard him thus no longer and speak out. You will be bold and tell everyone that their human imagination is the only creative power in the world. That God is imagination. He is the Father of all life. Imagining is his son, his creative power, and that is Jesus Christ.
Now, what must you do, to be doing the work of God? Believe in him whom he has sent. And whom did he send? I am! If the evidence comes as it did to these two ladies, what does it matter what the world thinks? Denying the evidence that there was no work, my friend revised the phone conversation. She heard them tell her they liked her work and would have many jobs for her in the future. She believes in him who he has sent, for she now believes in herself!
Our President is a man with a great deal of authority and power, wealth and fame, but if he does not know who he really is, when he departs this period of time he will find himself in a world just like this one. May I tell you: there is no other world until you escape this world of death. This I know from experience. I have sat in a chair with my eyes shut and stepped into a world of people just as solid and real as we are right now – yet I know I am in an entirely different world. When you die you are only dying to this time and space, for you simply step into another time and space to continue your dream.
This you will continue to do as long as you remain as sound asleep as you are now. Possessing the same identity, you will not occupy the same position. You may be in the state of great wealth when you make your exit from this world, to find yourself in the state of one who shines shoes, if that is necessary to awaken you to who Jesus Christ really is. Perhaps while shining shoes you begin to imagine you have so many customers you must hire others to work for you, and as your business grows, you begin to understand how it happened and realize who Jesus Christ really is.
One has to find Christ as his human imagination, and the only God as his I am, operating through his creative power, before he can leave this world. So it is, as you consciously use your imaginative power, you begin to awaken and experience scripture by being born from above and discovering God’s creative power, called David, to be your son. And when you have fulfilled scripture you will vanish from this world, leaving behind all that you have experienced.
So, you either believe in your own wonderful human imagination or you do not, for that is Christ. An event took place 2,000 years ago, but it didn’t take place once, never to take place again. His birth is taking place in the lives of everyone who hears and believes. So what must you do? Believe in him whom he has sent. I did not come into the world to make you think I am a holy man, but to tell you that I have awakened from the dream of life. I have finished the race. I have fought the good fight, and I have kept the faith. It doesn’t really matter when I drop this garment, for this world is over for me. I will tell you of my experiences while I am here, in the hope that you will believe – not in Neville, but in your own wonderful human imagination whom you sent!
Your true name is I am, and your creative power is called Jesus Christ. Because all things are made by your imagination, test yourself and see. Put your powerful imagination to the test. When my friend revised her telephone conversation, she used her powerful imagination to create an even better job for the person who had been hired as the art director. Confirmation came when she received the order for the magazine advertisement, therefore no one was hurt. Knowing exactly what she wanted, she simply assumed she had it, and no one was hurt. Always use your imagination lovingly for yourself and others, for everyone in the world is yourself anyway, as there is nothing but self!
You are predestined to experience everything spoken of in scripture concerning Jesus Christ and then you will know who you really are, but before it happens you can see him if you look through the eyes of Paul. Having been crucified with the creative power of God, Paul was not ashamed of the gospel, for he knew it was the power of salvation if all who heard believed! Now, I know faith is not the easiest thing in the world to develop, but may I appeal to you to not turn back like the rebels under Moses and search for other gods. Do not look for any physical causation, for causation is invisible.
The world is all imagination, as you imagine you are Jesus Christ. Do you believe in your imaginal act? On this level the made reveals the mistakes of the maker. Learn from your mistakes. In a moment of anxiety perhaps you made that which you do not want. Learn from that which you made, where you made your mistake. Don’t deny your harvest. Reap it, then plow and plant again, this time in the moment of joy and thanksgiving. Learn to believe in your own wonderful human imagination. There is nothing in the world but God and his creative power. God needs no intermediary between you and himself because he is buried in you. Learn to trust this creative power in you and then God will reveal himself to you through his son and your drama will be over.
Your father and mother are the visible cause of life, while Jesus Christ is its invisible cause. Fall in love with Christ and learn to trust him with all your might. Believe in this invisible causation in you, for without him was not anything made that was made. God, the only God, is your own wonderful human awareness. Jesus Christ is your power to create that which you are aware of! Having found God and his creative power, believe in him, for everyone who believes will be sent as I am sent. This is truly a very practical night, yet at the same time profoundly spiritual. Every word that I have said is true. Imagination will never fail you if you believe. Be like the lady who changed the telephone conversation to hear what she wanted to hear, even though it was completely opposite.
It is said that Jesus was opposed by Satan. Do you know who Satan is? The word means “opponent; opposite”. The world, reflecting the opposite of what you want to see, is your opponent, your Satan or the devil. That’s all the word means. “Turn this stone into bread if you think you are the creative power of the universe. Fall off this mountain if you think you are the creative power of the world, for did he not say he would give his angels power to lift you up if you dashed your foot against a stone?” Then, turning from the doubting mind, Satan vanished. Everyone has a Satan. Allow reason to tell you something cannot be done and Satan dwells in that doubting thought. The moment you accept Christ as the reality and creative power of the world, Satan is present, and to that degree Satan is taking advantage of salvation.
Having imagined what you want in the world, if doubt appears in thought or personified by another, say to yourself: “Get thee behind me Satan (get out of my sight) – I will have nothing to do with you.”
My friend said that after she heard the good news from her mother, she went into the kitchen, and as she was making herself a cup of coffee she heard my voice say: “That’s the spirit” and almost dropped the coffee. That’s exactly what Paul in me speaks to her, for I am all over now. I am no longer confined to the platform, but I am speaking every night to everyone who has heard and believed. Awake, I am now one with the Risen Christ, wearing the body of God.
There is only one body. Everyone who awakes is incorporated into that universal body to know you are it. And while your physical body sleeps, you will be all over the world. Your voice will be heard and you will be seen. That is the being you become after you have awakened from the dream of life. Tonight I urge you all to use the word imagination, for I have come to set this new idea against the old. Although people may rebel, when you get the results you want, it doesn’t matter how they object. The term to be used now is your own wonderful human imagination!

Goddard legt uit dat de lezing van de kerk er een is voor kinderen en voor mensen die nog niet ontwaakt zijn. In deze staat van bewustzijn ben je een slachtoffer. Je neemt geen verantwoordelijkheid voor je geluk.
De diepere boodschap komt uiteindelijk terecht bij degenen die eraan toe zijn.
Wat kerk betreft:
Als kind namen mijn ouders me mee naar de kerk. De katholieke kerk. Vanaf mijn elfde hoefde ik gelukkig niet meer.
Naar de kerk gaan was niet leuk. Er werden onbegrijpelijke teksten gesproken. Achteraf denk ik te weten hoe dat komt. Die lui in die jurken begrepen zelf ook niet wat ze stonden te verkondigen.
Een hoogtepunt in de dienst was de heilige communie. Je hoopte steeds weer op een tosti maar je kreeg een hosti. Een superdun smakeloos schijfje koek. Dat moest het lichaam van Christus voorstellen. Dan werd er wijn geschonken: Dat was het bloed van de zoon van God. Lekker dan! We gingen daar met z’n allen zijn bloed drinken. Wat een traditie.
Waar slaat het op? dacht ik als kind. En als volwassene denk ik dat nog steeds. Meer precies: ik heb de conclusie getrokken dat het ook echt nergens op slaat.
Want met het lichaam van Christus wordt blijkbaar onze menselijke verbeeldingskracht bedoeld. Die hebben we gemeenschappelijk. Als waren we één lichaam. Het lichaam van Christus is een metafoor voor ons vermogen om met alle mensen samen als één wezen te opereren. Samen te creëren. Om de schepping die er ligt aan te vullen, te vervolmaken.
De missie van Paul was om deze zienswijze onder alle mensen te verspreiden. Ook die buiten het Jodendom, wat in die dagen nogal dogmatisch en eenkennig was geworden.
Hij benadrukte dat het niet de bedoeling is om een afbeelding van God te maken en die te aanbidden. Waarom niet? Hij openbaarde dat we zelf God zijn. En ga je een God buiten jezelf aanbidden, dan schuif je de verantwoordelijkheid af. Bovendien haal je dan niet het maximale uit jezelf.
Bij een God buiten jezelf aanbidden kun je ook denken aan: geloven dat je gelukkig wordt van een partner, spullen kopen, astrologie, of een zelfhulpboek met hèt antwoord, enzovoorts. Door zelf God te zijn ervaar je geluk van de bovenste plank. Je komt in een flow. In de Staat van verlichting word je gedragen. Maar het werkt ook bij andere, zelf ontworpen staten. Als je je missie volgt. Zeker bent. Als je doet waar je voor gemaakt bent. Dat kun je zien als de Staat van de ‘verlosser’. Als je weet wat je hier op aarde te doen hebt, dan verdwijnen je problemen.
En om mijn bijdrage aan de uitleg van de Staat van Paul af te ronden. Aan het begin van dit artikel vertelde ik dat mijn spirituele zoektocht begon met de vraag: hoe komt het toch dat ik zo gelukkig ben, terwijl de omstandigheden daar totaal geen aanleiding toe geven?
Het antwoord op die vraag wil ik met een analogie beantwoorden.
Het roet op de stenen van de open haard in het herenhuis aan de Crooswijksesingel waar ik ben geboren zwol met de jaren aan tot een dikke laag. Tot we met kerst het vuur wat hoger op stookten. Een wonder! De witte stenen kwamen weer tevoorschijn. Schoongebrand.
Sinds ik de spirituele antwoorden vond lukt het me vrij aardig om een steen in het vuur te zijn zonder roetvorming.
